• Make teak parquet flooring colour lighter or keep it natural

  Hi Amy,

  Before sealing, unfinished teak can resemble oak in its light color. However, once sealed, teak typically darkens to a rich brownish hue.

  Like other exotic timbers, teak can be tricky to seal with normal water-base primers and lacquers. It will leave darker shaded streaks in areas where the roller has overcoated the previous pass. To avoid this, a solvent-based primer is used, e.g. Junckers SP Primer. This type of primer provides the best base for finishing exotic timbers, and it will make the original wood colour stand out even more with a rich, deep tone.

  If you prefer to keep the unfinished look of the teak or make it lighter, the only options available will be to use invisible / raw lacquer, like the Bona Mega Natural lacquer (or similar), or stain the floors with white-tinted primer (whitewash), such as Bona White primer or Junckers Prelak White. 

  The challenge here is how to apply these products on teak timber and avoid roller marks during the application. Applying these finishes on teak can be challenging, and we highly recommend to have a professional with experience in exotic woods handle the application.

  Ideally, timbers like teak, merbau, mahogany, walnut, jatoba should be left in their natural look.

• Do you sand bamboo flooring?

  While bamboo (as final product) is not exactly timber, it is possible to sand and varnish bamboo flooring. However, bamboo floor sanding needs to be done with extreme care and it requires a specific approach and highly skillful flooring technicians. We will not recommend sanding and varnishing bamboo flooring yourself.  Bamboo floor sealing, for example, requires the application of solvent based, rather than water-based sealants. Also, wood floor staining is not recommended on bamboo floors.

• How can I do a whitewashed finish on my wooden floors?

  You can achieve a durable whitewashed effect on your engineered wood flooring with both lacquers and oil-based products if you choose the right product and apply it properly. The choice of lacquer or oil will define the final appearance.

  Achieving whitewash effect with lacquer will result in a more uniform colour. This is done by either by mixing a white colourant with a clear lacquer / primer, use ready-mixed primer, or by applying white stain on the sanded floors, followed by the application of multiple coats of clear floor lacquer on top. For our floor restoration projects where staining to whitewashed finish is required, we use mainly white pigmented primers by Bona or Junckers.

  Oil-based products have ready-mixed stains and colours in various shades of white - available from all major brands - Osmo, Blanchon, Woka, Loba, Bona, Rubio Monocoat, Treatex and more. Hardwax-oils colours create more prominent grain than lacquers - main difference between the two finishes. Clear coat on top is required after the application of the colour, except for Rubio, which is a 1 coat system.

• How do you handle gaps between parquet blocks?

  Gaps between parquet blocks are a common issue that we address during restoration. The most effective and aesthetically pleasing method involves gap filling using a resin filler mixed with fine dust collected directly from your parquet floor during the initial sanding process. This bespoke mixture ensures the filler perfectly matches the colour and texture of your wood, creating a seamless and virtually invisible repair. For larger gaps or specific aesthetic preferences, sometimes individual slivers of wood can be inserted and glued, though the dust-and-resin method is generally preferred for its precision and speed. This technique not only improves the floor's appearance but also helps to prevent dirt and debris from accumulating in the gaps.

• How are your floor restoration service prices calculated?

  Our wooden floor restoration service prices are primarily calculated based on several key factors. The most significant element is the type of wooden flooring and the total size in square meters of the area to be restored. We also consider the current condition of the floor, as heavily damaged floors requiring extensive repairs. The type of finish chosen (e.g., oil-based, water-based lacquer, hardwax oil) also influences the price, with commercial grade finishes often being more expensive and some are slower drying.

  Finally, any additional services like staining, custom colour matching, or intricate pattern work will be factored into the final price. We aim to provide a transparent, itemised quote after an on-site assessment to ensure you understand all components of the cost.

• How long does sanding & painting stairs take?

  Sanding and painting stairs generally takes between 3 to 5 days for an average staircase. This timeframe is influenced by the number of steps, the condition of the existing surface, and the desired finish. The process begins with thorough sanding to remove old paint or varnish and create a smooth, clean surface for adhesion. This can be time-consuming due to the confined and intricate nature of stairs. Multiple coats of primer and paint are applied and the drying time can be between 2 to 5 hours per coat.
